At 60m high, riders get a view of the entire city, lights a-twinkling stretching into the distance as far as the eye can see. Even if you’re afraid of heights, the 42 enclosed gondolas offer a feeling of security. This big wheel can be enjoyed until 9.30pm during the week, 11pm on Friday and Saturdays, and 10pm Sundays, meaning that you can take a spin before or after dinner.
- Open Air Cinemas
Is there anything more romantic than snuggling up with your loved one under the stars at an open air cinema? If you’re a film buff, you’re lucky enough to have a number to choose from. Some, like the the Ben and Jerry’s Openair Cinema at the Rainforest Green and the Moonlight Cinema in New Farm Park are seasonal, while The Limes Rooftop Bar and East Street Markets run all year. For the ultimate cinema experience, the Limes even offers you the chance to relax in their hot tub as you take in the movie.
- The Collective Markets
Even if you’re a shopaholic, you might not have thought about shopping at night, but the Collective Markets on Stanley Street Plaza on the South Bank are open until 9pm Fridays and Saturdays. Not your average market, the Collective Markets are a conglomeration of artists, designers and artisans offering everything from jewellery to food. Whatever you’re interested in, there’s bound to be something that catches your eye.
- Eat Street Markets
If you’re feeling hungry and love street food, then Eat Street Markets are the ideal destination for you. This bustling food market offers cuisine from across the globe, including from France, Hungary, Turkey, and Asia. Mix and match your tastes, wash it down with a cocktail, and listen to the live music that is usually laid on. Open Friday and Saturday evenings until 10pm, it’s perfect for those who enjoy a varied diet!
- Kayaking after dark
Feeling active? Want a unique view of the city? Then kayak your way along the Brisbane River in a one and a half hour paddle around the metropolis. Passing under Story Bridge, your water-based tour can be combined with a classic Australian barbecue in a riverside marquee for a three hour nighttime adventure that showcases some of the best Brisbane has to offer.
- Dinner cruise
If you want to see Brisbane from the river but aren’t feeling that energetic, then a scenic dinner cruise on an authentic paddle wheeler is a luxurious and iconic alternative to kayaking. Casting off at 7pm, diners can sit back and watch the city slide by under a starlit sky as they tuck into a delicious three course meal. Live entertainment is included, and the tour includes such famous sights as Kangaroo Point Cliffs, the Botanic Gardens, maritime museum, Southbank precinct, and the Story Bridge.
- Fortitude Valley
If bustling nightlife is your thing, don’t miss Fortitude Valley, or The Valley as it’s known by the locals. It was the very first entertainment district in the whole of Australia, and continues to be known for its varied nightlife. It’s an area of contradictions, where heritage listed properties rub shoulders with contemporary architecture. Choose from shopping, dining, live music, contemporary arts, and the latest club hits played by international DJs for the ultimate night out. The Valley is also home to the Chinatown Mall, where you will find restaurants, markets, and oriental supermarkets.
- Cosmic Skydome – Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium
Want to know more about Brisbane’s place in the universe? Then a visit to the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium on a Saturday night is the perfect way to find out about the heavens above Brisbane. The Cosmic Skydome is a 12.5 metre diameter projection dome, where you can learn about the constellations visible that night. For those interested in space and its exploration, qualified astronomers share their knowledge of the universe, and the future of cosmology.
- Climb the Story Bridge
If you’re feeling really energetic and want a whole different perspective, then climbing the famous Story Bridge is a unique experience. So unique, that it’s just one of three bridge climbs in the world. Choose from a twilight or nighttime climb, which each take around two and a half hours. Watch the metropolis light up as the sun sets, and look out across the city from the apex of the bridge for an unforgettable view.
- Underground Opera
If you’re into the arts, then make sure you catch a performance in the 140 year old Spring Hill Reservoirs. These large underground spaces held Brisbane’s main water supply up until 1962, and have been converted into a one-of-a-kind venue with amazing acoustics for a unique experience. The Underground Opera Company is the resident organisation, but it’s also used for performances by small theatre troupes through the year.
- Twilight Helicopter Flight – Archerfield Airport
If you’re really want to treat yourself – or perhaps have a very big question to ask – a twilight helicopter ride over Brisbane has to be the ultimate indulgence. Taking off from the Archerfield Airport, you’ll fly over St Lucia, the Brisbane River and the central business district, taking in many of the major Brisbane sights. A truly memorable experience, just make sure you don’t forget your camera. Flights are available on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
